Ravenswood School in Nailsea recently held its very first Charity Day, raising an impressive £1,078 in support of Springboard Opportunity Group.
The idea for Charity Day was inspired by one of the school’s own students. As part of a persuasive writing exercise in Years 10 and 11, pupils were invited to write letters to the Headteacher. While some students made light-hearted suggestions, such as shortening the school day, one letter stood out.
Mark Senior, Headteacher at Ravenswood School, explained:
“One of our Looked After Children wrote to me suggesting that the school raise money for a charity. It was such a heartfelt and thoughtful letter that we knew we had to act on it. We decided to hold a Charity Day during our Activities Week, and it was a huge success.”
“Many of our pupils attended Springboard before joining Ravenswood,” Mr Senior continued. “We know first-hand the fantastic work they do and the funding challenges they face. Every penny really does count.”
Held on 7th July, the Charity Day featured a wide range of fun and engaging activities, including a bike-a-thon, cake sales, car washing, obstacle courses, a staff inflatable race, and even a chance to ‘Gunge the Headteacher’.
“It was a brilliant day and a fantastic learning opportunity for our pupils,” said Mr Senior. “We’re so grateful to everyone who donated and took part. It would be wonderful if more schools could hold charity days like this. We’re already looking forward to next year!””
Ruth Glover, Springboard’s CEO says “We’re also so grateful to Ravenswood School for supporting Springboard through their first Charity Day. It’s heartwarming to see the idea come from a student, and the connection between our two communities makes it even more special. The funds raised will make a real difference to the children and families we support.”
