Karen’s Big 40 Challenge Raises Over £1,000 for Springboard

Karen, with family and friends, reaching the end of the Challenge on Day 40 at Springboard Clevedon.

As part of our 40th anniversary celebrations, we’ve invited supporters, families, staff and friends to take on their own Big 40 Challenge. One of our amazing Early Years Practitioners, Karen, embraced the challenge in a way that was deeply personal to her – and the results have been incredible.

Over 40 consecutive days, Karen committed to walking at least one mile every day, setting herself an initial goal of 64 miles. By the end of her challenge, she had not only exceeded that target, walking an impressive 87.9 miles, but had also raised a fantastic £1,010 to support Springboard’s work with children and their families.

For Karen, however, this challenge was about much more than miles walked or money raised.

Springboard has been part of her life for many years. Before becoming a member of staff, Karen experienced Springboard as a parent and later served as a trustee. Through every stage, the charity has held a special place in her heart.

“Springboard is very important to me,” Karen explains. “It was my safe place during some difficult times with my son, and now I have the privilege of giving back and paying it forward through my work.”

Karen’s original target of 64 miles was inspired by the children and colleagues she works alongside. Our South Weston setting has 16 children and four staff – 16 multiplied by 4 gave her the challenge goal.

While walking a mile a day may not sound daunting to some, Karen knew it would push her well beyond her comfort zone. “Challenges are so personal,” she says. “People who know me well know this was a huge challenge for me. I’ve resisted exercise for most of my life.”

Part of that reluctance stemmed from difficult childhood experiences, as well as years of pain and restricted movement caused by hip problems. In 2024, Karen underwent a hip replacement – a life-changing operation that inspired her to look at physical activity in a different way. “A new hip is no small gift, both financially and emotionally,” she says. “It has completely changed my life. I wanted this challenge to be a way of cherishing that gift and keeping my hip moving.”

Since her operation, Karen has been walking more regularly to maintain her mobility and strength. Although she’s quick to point out that she won’t be following in the footsteps of her husband and taking up running any time soon. “Those who know us well know that I’ll never become a runner like my husband!” she laughs. “Although I have joined him at Severn Bridge Parkrun before. It’s definitely a Parkwalk for me, but it’s still 5km!”

Throughout the 40 days, Karen was supported every step of the way by friends, family, colleagues and supporters who sponsored her challenge, joined her on walks and encouraged her to keep going.

We are incredibly grateful to Karen for her dedication, determination and generosity. Her challenge embodies everything our Big 40 Challenge is about – celebrating our anniversary by doing something meaningful, personal and impactful.

A huge thank you also goes to everyone who sponsored Karen and helped her raise such an amazing amount. Every pound raised will help us continue to provide our vital service helping children with SEND, and the families who rely on our services.

Karen’s fundraising page remains open, so there is still time to support her challenge and read more about the personal journey behind it; https://www.justgiving.com/page/karen-squintani-1?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=EM or via her Facebook blog: Karen’s 40 challenge for Springboard

Thank you, Karen, for going the extra mile – and then some – for Springboard!
